Adoption Support

Adoption Support

We stand for families seeking connection.

Adoption is a life-long process, extending far beyond the initial touchpoint. It can bring about waves of mixed emotions and challenges at different moments in life for all persons involved.

Sometimes, in the years following an adoption, parents and/or adult adoptees wish to reunite with their family member(s) — a decision that can greatly impact familial relationships and personal well-being.

We offer post-adoption support and reunification services to individuals and families who completed their adoption with Board of Child Care (now Everstand) and are over 21 years of age.

How we support adoption families.

Retrieving Background Information

We maintain informational summaries of all past Board of Child Care (now Everstand) adoptions that may be accessed by interested adopted adults or interested birth parents. This information does not include identifying information, such as names or dates of birth.

  • For adopted adults: information includes background on the birth family, any medical information about the birth family on file, and the circumstances of the adoption.
  • For birth parents: information includes a profile of the adoptive family, notes from the post-placement supervision, and any updates from the adoptive family.

Facilitating a Search

The search process operates under the principle of mutual consent, meaning the birth parent or adopted person being searched for can choose if they want contact with the person searching for them.

If desired, our staff can act as an intermediary for contact, meaning the individuals involved do not have to release their identities. Or, if both parties agree, their contact information can be shared so that they can have direct contact with one another.

Our staff can, and often does, remain involved in a supportive role throughout the entire process.

REGULATORY GUIDELINES  |  All Everstand (formerly Board of Child Care) search, contact, and reunion services operate under the guidelines and mandates of Maryland and District of Columbia law.

We are here to help you.

If you would like to discuss our Search and Reunion Program, or any of your questions about the search process, contact us at adoptions@everstand.org. Our licensed Confidential Intermediary has experience in the complex issues involved in these types of post-adoption reunions and searches.
